Signs in the Torah

Cain:

וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יְהוָה לָכֵן כָּל־הֹרֵג קַיִן שִׁבְעָתַיִם יֻקָּם וַיָּשֶׂם יְהוָה לְקַיִן אוֹת לְבִלְתִּי הַכּוֹת־אֹתוֹ כָּל־מֹצְאוֹ

Gene. 4:15   And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever might be the slayer of Cain, sevenfold shall vengeance be taken on him.”  And the Lord set a sign for Cain so that anyone finding him not smite him.

                                                                                                                                                    

The rainbow:

אֶת־קַשְׁתִּי נָתַתִּי בֶּעָנָן וְהָיְתָה לְאוֹת בְּרִית בֵּינִי וּבֵין הָאָרֶץ׃

Gene. 9:13  “I have set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.”

                                                                                                                                                    

Moses sent by God:

וַיֹּאמֶר כִּי־אֶהְיֶה עִמָּךְ וְזֶה־לְּךָ הָאוֹת כִּי אָנֹכִי שְׁלַחְתִּיךָ בְּהוֹצִיאֲךָ אֶת־הָעָם מִמִּצְרַיִם תַּעַבְדוּן אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים עַל הָהָר הַזֶּה׃

Exod. 3:12  And He said, “Surely I will be with you.  And this will be the sign for you that I have sent you.  With your bringing the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

                                                                                                                                                    

Separation of Israelites and Egyptians:

וְשַׂמְתִּי פְדֻת בֵּין עַמִּי וּבֵין עַמֶּךָ לְמָחָר יִהְיֶה הָאֹת הַזֶּה׃

Exod. 8:19  “And I will put a division between My people and your people.  Tomorrow this sign shall happen.”

The sign (in Exod. 8:20) was that flies appeared in Egypt but not in Goshen.

                                                                                                                                                    

Blood of Passover:

וְהָיָה הַדָּם לָכֶם לְאֹת עַל הַבָּתִּים אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם שָׁם וְרָאִיתִי אֶת־הַדָּם וּפָסַחְתִּי עֲלֵכֶם וְלֹא־יִהְיֶה בָכֶם נֶגֶף לְמַשְׁחִית בְּהַכֹּתִי בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם׃

Exod. 12:13  “And the blood shall be for a sign of yours upon the houses where you are.  When I see the blood, then I will pass over above you and there shall not be a plague of destruction on you during My strike in the land of Egypt.”

                                                                                                                                                    

Festival of Passover:

וְהָיָה לְךָ לְאוֹת עַל־יָדְךָ וּלְזִכָּרוֹן בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ לְמַעַן תִּהְיֶה תּוֹרַת יְהוָה בְּפִיךָ כִּי בְּיָד חֲזָקָה הוֹצִאֲךָ יְהֹוָה מִמִּצְרָיִם׃

Exod. 13:9  “And it shall be for you for a sign on your hand and for a memorial between your eyes so that the law of the Lord shall be in your mouth.  For with a strong ‘hand’ the Lord brought you out of Egypt.”

                                                                                                                                                    

The Sabbath:

וְאַתָּה דַּבֵּר אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר אַךְ אֶת־שַׁבְּתֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ כִּי אוֹת הִוא בֵּינִי וּבֵינֵיכֶם לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם לָדַעַת כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה מְקַדִּשְׁכֶם׃

Exod. 31:13  “And you speak to the children of Israel saying, ‘Surely you shall keep My sabbaths, for it shall be a sign between Me and you throughout your generations to know that I am the Lord Who sanctifies you.’”

                                                                                                                                                    

Censers of Nadab and Abihu:

אֱמֹר אֶל־אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן־אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן וְיָרֵם אֶת־הַמַּחְתֹּת מִבֵּין הַשְּׂרֵפָה וְאֶת־הָאֵשׁ זְרֵה־הָלְאָה כִּי קָדֵשׁוּ׃

אֵת מַחְתּוֹת הַחַטָּאִים הָאֵלֶּה בְּנַפְשֹׁתָם וְעָשׂוּ אֹתָם רִקֻּעֵי פַחִים צִפּוּי לַמִּזְבֵּחַ כִּי־הִקְרִיבֻם לִפְנֵי־יְהוָה וַיִּקְדָּשׁוּ וְיִהְיוּ לְאוֹת לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל

Numb. 17:2, 3  “Say to Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, that he shall pick up the censers from between the burning, and scatter the fire far away, for they have been made holy, these censers of sinners, by their deaths.  So they shall make broad plates with them, a covering for the altar, because their being offered before the Lord, and they have been made holy and have been for a sign for the children of Israel.”

                                                                                                                                                    

Rod of Aaron:

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה הָשֵׁב אֶת־מַטֵּה אַהֲרֹן לִפְנֵי הָעֵדוּת לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת לְאוֹת לִבְנֵי־מֶרִי וּתְכַל תְּלוּנֹּתָם מֵעָלַי וְלֹא יָמֻתוּ׃

Numb. 17:25  And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back the rod of Aaron by the testimony, to be a charge for a sign to the rebellious children, so there will be an end of their murmurs against Me, and they will not die.”

                                                                                                                                                    

Tephilin:

וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל־יָדֶךָ וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ׃

Deut.6:8  “And you shall bind them for a sign on your hand and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.”

                                                                                                                                                    

A false prophet:

כִּי־יָקוּם בְּקִרְבְּךָ נָבִיא אוֹ חֹלֵם חֲלוֹם וְנָתַן אֵלֶיךָ אוֹת אוֹ מוֹפֵת׃

וּבָא הָאוֹת וְהַמּוֹפֵת אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּר אֵלֶיךָ לֵאמֹר נֵלְכָה אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יְדַעְתָּם וְנָעָבְדֵם׃

לֹא תִשְׁמַע אֶל־דִּבְרֵי הַנָּבִיא הַהוּא אוֹ אֶל־חוֹלֵם הַחֲלוֹם הַהוּא כִּי מְנַסֶּה יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֶתְכֶם לָדַעַת הֲיִשְׁכֶם אֹהֲבִים אֶת־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם בְּכָל־לְבַבְכֶם וּבְכָל־נַפְשְׁכֶם׃

Deut. 13:2, 3, 4  “When there would arise in your midst a prophet or a dreamer of dreams and he would give a sign or wonder to you, and the sign or the wonder that he spoke to you would come to pass, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and serve them,' you shall not hearken to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord, your God, will be testing you to acknowledge who of you are loving the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul.”

                                                                                                                                                    

Curses:

וְהָיוּ בְךָ לְאוֹת וּלְמוֹפֵת וּבְזַרְעֲךָ עַד־עוֹלָם׃

Deut. 28: 46  “And they [the curses] will be with you and with your seed for a sign and for a wonder for ever,
